British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
